In light of the 18th Asian Games, Hotel Indonesia Kempinski's history repeats itself.
Hotel Indonesia first operated in 1962 as the first five-star luxury hotel in Southeast Asia to offer international standards. The hotel was built on the occasion of the fourth Asian Games in 1962 and inaugurated by the first president of Indonesia, Soekarno. Right in front of the hotel, stands the Welcome Statue, intended to welcome the guests who visited Jakarta for the Asian Games. Now, together with Hotel Indonesia, the statue has become the landmark of Jakarta.
Since 2009, Hotel Indonesia has operated under the management of Kempinski Hotels S.A., Europe’s oldest luxury hotel group, who has a long tradition of managing historic buildings and landmark hotels. History repeats, now that Jakarta will be one of the host cities for the 18th Asian Games; a number of guests of the event have booked rooms at Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta.
Starting from the beginning, the property was built to be unrivaled, using the best materials and furniture that it could have. It was also the first building with an elevator in the country. It was built in the heart of Jakarta, on the side of Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, which was named after the hotel. Hotel Indonesia was built simultaneously with other constructions to support the event, namely M. H. Thamrin Street, Gatot Subroto Street, Semanggi Flyover, Gelora Bung Karno sport complex and Indonesia’s first TV station, TVRI. The hotel was designed by a Danish architect, Abel Sorensen. It was built in an L-shaped, which symbolised an embracing gesture. In 1993 it was declared as national heritage by the DKI Jakarta government.
The historical value combined with the facilities and services inspired by exquisite European flair have turned the hotel into a luxury heritage. Many international events have taken place at the hotel, including state dinners with visiting diplomats and monarchs in Pelataran Ramayana. The unique pavilion has become an iconic part of the hotel and become a venue for weddings and social events.
Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta houses a total of 289 guestrooms, including the super-secure Presidential Suite and four Diplomatic Suites. Other luxury facilities include the 3,000 sqm Kempinski Grand Ballroom, the 1,000 sqm Bali Room, and a rooftop swimming pool with the skyline view. A myriad of F&B venues offers various menu, ranging from its legendary porridge to authentic German specialties.
