Batik Kayu

To live is to struggle. The barren land in the hills around Krebet village near Yogyakarta, made it impossible to grow food or farm cattle so the locals had to find some innovative ways to create their own sources of income. In the 1970’s, a local named Gunjiar had the idea of creating handicrafts to support him and his family. This seemingly small initiative has unexpectedly turned Krebet into the largest center of batik kayu (wooden batik) craft and made its name well-known all over Indonesia.
