French sculptor and designer Jerome Abel Seguin envisioned an extraordinary open- space house in a quiet corner of Bali, reinventing the workshop spirit in his own way. Rather than building a conventional villa, he chose to defy local norms, opting for a 19th-century industrial workshop aesthetic. Indonesia Design was invited to explore this unique home, where pulleys, hoists, and antique tools seamlessly blend with handcrafted elements—all created from scratch.

Upon entering the house, a colonnade of salvaged telephone phone lines welcomed the guests

On the bustling touristic island of Bali, amidst lush tropical greenery and vibrant cultural heritage, lies an exquisite gem, an artist’s tropical house and studio that encapsulates the essence of creativity, tranquility, and
sustainable living.

Visiting Jerome Abel Seguin’s home is like stepping into the essence of his artistry. From the moment you enter, the space reflects his identity—an artist’s workshop filled with striking displays of his work. Nestled in a non-tourist area of Bali, the house stands on a 1,400-square-metre plot that was once a rice field. A gallery lined with a colonnade of thirty reclaimed telephone poles and a long swimming pool, framed by lush palm and pandan trees, define its serene setting.

Step inside, and guests will be greeted by a harmonious fusion of natural materials, metal coloured tones, and minimalist décor. The open plan layout creates a sense of spaciousness and connectivity, allowing people to move freely between living, working, and relaxing areas.

Jerome’s creativity breathes life into unique hardwood pieces and industrial salvage, transforming them into monumental works of art. Ranging from beds, chaise lounges, and benches to tables, consoles, and sculptural screens, his designs are both massive and organic. His abstract sculptures draw inspiration from nature, whether from forms he encounters in the forest or elements of vernacular architecture. Through his work, he seamlessly merges modernity with the raw beauty of natural materials.

A House Full of Art

Upon entering the expansive, high-ceilinged living area, visitors are met with a striking juxtaposition of antique and contemporary elements. Two old iron drills sit beside a Javanese colonial armchair, whilst a carved wooden panel from Sumatra adds a touch of heritage. The open-space layout unfolds into a seating area, where an all-white armless sofa, slipper chairs, and a 19th-century Javanese teak bench surround a coffee table handcrafted by Jerome from reclaimed teak beams and salvaged iron.

“I cannot breathe in small spaces,” Jerome explains, emphasising his vision for an open, airy home. “I designed this to feel more horizontal than vertical, creating
a sense of peace.”The house consists of three enclosed rooms, which are an office and two bedrooms. They’re arranged asymmetrically across from each other. Opposite the living area, an open kitchen accommodates Jerome’s love for cooking, seamlessly integrated into the home’s flowing design.

The dining area continues the theme of artistry, featuring furniture designed by Jerome from reclaimed materials. Along the walls, silver-plated pulleys rest atop 19th-century Chinese pedestal tables, whilst his signature furniture pieces bring a sensuality and elegance that make the space both grand and inviting.

A Relaxing Oasis

Extending from the spacious living area, the dining room opens onto a lush corridor lined with a swimming pool. At its heart sits a long ironwood dining table, where guests and friends often gather for leisurely lunches and intimate dinners. The play of light and shadow, the sound of rustling leaves, and the scent of tropical air all contribute to a multisensory experience that fuels the camaraderie.

The landscape behind the house enhances the tranquil atmosphere, with a 10-metre swimming lane stretching along the façade. A chromatic palette of natural tones ties the elements together, from the paved walkways to the vibrant tropical plants. Palm trees sway gently, inviting island breezes that complete the essence of this meticulously crafted and open-space retreat. The outdoor areas are an extension of the indoor living spaces creating inviting al fresco settings for relaxation and reconnect with the surroundings.

After all, the ambiance of the house is one of serenity and contemporary, with an understated elegance that allows the artwork to take centre stage. Carefully curated décor create a sense of balance, providing the ideal environment for artistic expression and contemplation. All in all, the property is a testament to Jerome Abel Seguin’s vision and artistry.
