The house exudes a charming ambiance almost poetically. What was the initial message from the owner?

The client, an Indonesian-Japanese couple, requested a modern, minimalist home with Japanese design sensibilities. They also asked for the design to adhere to feng shui principles, ensuring a harmonious spatial layout and balanced energy flow.

The beautiful design of this house leaves a lasting impression. How did the design process unfold?

The process began with the client’s 9-grid layout, which outlined the placement of key spaces, such as the living and bedroom areas while leaving the center of the house open. We introduced voids and strategic openings from this foundation to foster a sense of spaciousness, lightness, and continuity.

An interesting aspect of using feng shui. What were the challenges you faced during the design process to fulfill the feng shui requirements?

The primary challenge was reconciling the rigid feng shui grid with a modern, open design. We overcame this by incorporating voids, double- height spaces, and large windows to allow natural light and enhance ventilation, and frame inward and outward views.

Upon completion, what was the owner’s initial reaction to seeing the house?

The client was delighted with the result. They were particularly impressed by how seamlessly the feng shui principles were integrated into the modern, minimalist design, with clear references to Japanese aesthetics.

Which part of the house is the most favorite one for the owner?

The rooftop entertainment room. The owners particularly enjoy watching the natural light flood through the skylight and how the shadows shift throughout the day, creating a dynamic and constantly changing atmosphere.
