Places of worships are often built with classic design references. But that doesn’t always have to be the case. A lot of these places, such as churches, mosques, synagogues and temples, have also been designed in Contemporary style and do not lose their spirit and charm to the followers or others.

Here we are featuring three contemporary churches and chapel from different countries. Their styles are so different from one another but all are equally head-turning.

Bosjes Chapel, South Africa, designed by South-African born Coetzee Steyn from London-based Steyn Studio. The silhouette emulates the surrounding mountains and the whole poetic design takes inspiration from Psalm 36:7 in the form of the wing-like roof.

The Holy Redeemer Church in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Spain, is part of a compound that also includes a community centre and a public square. It’s inspired by the geology of the volcanic island with four massive rock-like buildings rising from the ground. It uses mainly concretes, which allows the architect, Fernando Menis, to work only with local companies and materials; principles that he adheres.

Siegerland Motorway Church is located in Winsdorf, Germany. The church is designed by Schneider + Schumacher with an abstract form exterior that is stylised silhouette of a traditional village church. It took less time to build than it normally would because the majority of the building components were constructed off-site.

Let us know if you have been to these churches or any other uniquely designed church. We’d like to know!
