There is no simple translation for the Danish word “hygge” (pronounced HUEgah). It translates roughly to “cosiness”. Essentially, hygge means creating a warm ambience, spending quality time with family, indulging in good food and drinking with great friends. Perhaps you could call it the Danish counterpart to the French phrase “joie de vivre”. Joy Karabaczek explores this Danish art of enjoying life’s myriad pleasures at an afternoon tea with Casper Klynge, the cordial Danish ambassador to Indonesia, in his well-appointed residence.
