What were the most common requests from your clients during the pandemic?

My clients mostly requested a landscape design that was more in the ‘art natural’ style (harmonious and open), and landscape designs that integrated the indoor and outdoor areas.

What is coming next for landscape design?

I think the trend is leaning towards natural design in any style. ‘Connection with nature’ will be a favourite, as it also becomes a lifestyle. In the post-pandemic, the feeling of being restrained impacts people’s psyche. They need fresh air, which can be interpreted as an abundance of oxygen or an open space. People need to channel their need for freedom.

Now, people are more conscious about the significance of healthy living and being connected with nature. They request good air circulation at home, leafy landscapes with plants that produce more oxygen, and basically a lifestyle that allows them to be close to nature.

How do you anticipate these trends?

The most important thing is to have an ability to integrate the hardscape (non-growing) and softscape (growing) elements of the interior. This is because for indoor space it’s crucial to have a detailed plan to avoid problems in the maintenance, post design and construction stages. The problems include muddiness, watering, mosquitoes and vandalism if it’s in a public facility. Indoor landscapes are more challenging especially the public facilities because of factors like maintenance, the business operating hours. Challenges also come from the surrounding elements like the lighting placement or whether there’s any lighting at night, AC set too cold, trapped heat from different angles, as well as the depth of the soil and the wall, and the limited height of the space. In outdoor spaces, water goes directly into the soil, there’s abundant sun light, and watering at night is more manageable.

Another consideration is the integration of the interior and exterior concept. For instance, stone flowerpots fit well in a modern setting that uses a lot of marble, or matt brown containers for rustic buildings. It’s also important to choose the right plants, like orchids and petunias for a home with predominantly soft colours.
