What’s the most common request from your client (during and post pandemic)?
“Depending on the architect or interior designer, in general, every client demands a lot of natural lighting coming to their house, but what happens during the transition of the afternoon to night time? As lighting designers, we need to make a good atmosphere with artificial light illuminance to the material surrounding, furniture placement, overall look of the ceiling composition, and last but not least the proper specification for the lighting.
Second, we cannot deny that the pandemic impacts a lot on everyone’s economy, not only the residential project but also the commercial project yet the show must go on and the task for us is how to manage a good design or ambiance with a reasonable budget.
Lastly, during the pandemic, the trend and growth of the smart home system especially in lighting systems developed significantly. We’re talking about wireless technology, as a result, we saw even a couple of years back, systems that still undergoes yet these years, lots of brands popping up offering smart homes as an affordable solution and good to have in the projects like residential and also commercial. “
What can we expect from the next lighting design trends?
every project has its own priority. The trend itself is not far from how we use the proper lighting specification following leD technology to match the budget. one of the examples also the light that is fancy enough to change colour temperature from 2700K to 6500K from single light.
As mentioned before, wireless technology getting more complex and coming to a smart home system. Things that not only control lighting but create scenes to program your curtain, TV, AC, appliances etc, as flexibly as we want. For sure, we’re expecting more and more reliable products with good quality, flexibility in function, smarter, and universal in the use of the application which is very important. The last thing is they come up with a good design and material finish.
What are some of the things to look for in good lighting design?
For basic specifications, try to start paying attention to the CrI value, and proper colour temperature that reflects the material surrounds could boost the look of the project. A couple of years back, the CrI80 value was minimum standard in the local mass market. Nowadays a good minimum is CrI90+, not just simply 90 value but with a good r9 (red) value. It is quite technical and definitely requires an amount of time and experience to see and experience the luminaire itself. It will help the majority of the designers to set a proper light on their projects.
Try to be open-minded to the recent technology, mixing and matching
every component and usage from every specification on the lighting system. always look into the design of the product that matches the interior, because in the end, it is still a team collaboration to match the function with good design and proper ambiance.
