Hans Susantio, founder of Vin.da.te Interior & Architecture, is known for his refined interpretation of modern Art Deco design. His work has shaped numerous upscale residences and office interiors, including this striking Sky Suite at The St. Regis Residences in the heart of Jakarta. In conversation with Indonesia Design, Hans shares the inspirations and design philosophy behind this luxurious home.

The residence exudes a poetic yet luxurious ambiance. What was the owner’s initial message to you when the project began?

The client’s request was refreshingly simple. She mentioned her appreciation for balanced lighting and shared one clear preference: “Not too dark.” Beyond that, she gave me complete creative freedom to shape the design of this sky suite. That brief became the starting point for the project, allowing me to develop a space where light, material, and atmosphere work together to create a refined and tranquil residence.

What elements do you consistently incorporate into your design?

In every project, I aim to balance aesthetics with functionality. A space should not only look beautiful but also feel comfortable and practical for everyday living. I carefully consider elements such as layout, lighting, materials, and especially colour selection, all of which play a significant role in shaping the mood and overall harmony of a space. When these components come together thoughtfully, the result is a design that is visually pleasing while supporting how people truly live in the space.

The colour palette at this residence is quite varied. How did you approach the use of colour?

I explored a range of colours to compliment and balance the natural light entering the space. Rather than relying on a single dominant tone, each area was allowed to develop its own character. Some spaces incorporate bolder colours to create depth, while others remain lighter to enhance a sense of calm. The client particularly loves baby blue. Therefore I incorporated the colour into several elements, including the walls and a charming baby-blue pantry.

What was the owner’s initial reaction when they first saw the design?

The client responded very positively and was genuinely impressed when they first saw the design. They felt the space successfully captured the spirit of what we had envisioned. It’s a refined yet welcoming sky-suite. What resonated most was how the design balances relaxation with a sense of celebration, allowing the home to feel both peaceful and lively. They also appreciated how their personal tastes and lifestyle were seamlessly integrated throughout the space.
