Makassar is one of the largest cities in eastern Indonesia. Since the Dutch occupation, the city has been used as a business center and government base with quite a vast coverage. In 1935, the Dutch East Indies government started to build the infrastructure for an airport to support the economy and administrative works in the largest city in the island of Sulawesi. The infrastructure is located 22 km north of Makassar and was dubbed the Kadieng Terbang Field. After being fully operational in 1937, more than 70 years later on the same spot a new, modern airport was introduced. Named the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport, it comes complete with one of the best airport facilities in Indonesia and is expected to accommodate up to 7 million passengers each year.
