Distinguished as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, Petra, now became the capital city of the Nabateans, is an archaeological city known for its carved out rock construction. Although the historical city was possibly built as early as 5th century BC, it remained unknown until a Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt found the world’s hidden treasure while examining the site in 1821 and later on introduced to the Western world. Located between the Red Sea and Dead Sea, Jordan’s most-visited attraction is surrounded by mountains, separated by tracks and valleys - this extremely unique landscape resulted in remarkable system of dams for directing and providing water to dry area. Due to the accessible cultures found in their history, Petra's architecture is influenced by both ancient Eastern traditions as well as Western Classical architecture from Hellenistic Greece.
