The Poetry of Subtle Luxury

The living room area depicting Japandi style aesthetics, a mix of function & form at its best

Imagine a young family with parents in their 40’s, who love to travel and collect mid-century furniture, with two children, a teenager and a six-year-old, who love to bake cookies and play Lego. The father loves classic cars and dogs, the mother collects stylish shoes and bags, and sometimes they work from home and entertain themselves with good whiskey after hours. They take delight in a neat home with understated elegance, compact with functional furniture that are easy to maintain. They are a practical family who doesn’t need many decorations, but still enjoys the warmth of family visit, especially from the grandparents.

The description above is a family that Yuni Jie imagined to inhabit the four-bedroom apartment which interior she designed for one of Savyavasa’s show units. Creating an ideal balance of practicality and style, the show unit boasts her signature Japandi style, infused with a touch of Indonesian craft.

Iconic classic pieces such as Eames lounge chair & George Nelson hanging lamps adorn the common area

The wall art that adorns the master bedroom is a collaboration between Yuni, DuAnyam and Every, which was developed during the pandemic. Woven by the mothers in east Indonesia, it brings warmth and adds comfort to the room. Meanwhile, the guest bedroom is embellished with a collection of wallpaper series designed by Yuni and Sekata Living, also inspired by Indonesian weaving. Not only aesthetic, the application of these collections is also in-line with what Savyavasa is offering: a modern living with a focus on sustainability.

“Another implementation of sustainability is selecting original iconic furniture, which guarantees a high quality and a design that lasts. And one more thing that I like about Savyavasa is that they keep more than 300 trees on the land, which is exceptional for a packed city like Jakarta,” Yuni explained. What’s more, the apartment is enriched with artworks created by Indonesian artists, including Faisal Habibi and Sinta Tantra.

Yuni’s personal favourite is the walk-in storage dedicated for bags and shoes. As for the biggest challenge was deciding what to make of the fourth room. “The Savyavasa team and I finally agreed on creating a triple-function room: a guest room with a camouflaged door that can alternately function as a playroom and as a study for the kids,” Yuni explained.

Casa Oak

Artwork that double functions as the TV door

Drawing inspiration from oak, a highly valued wood for its strength, durability and timeless beauty, Eko Priharseno designed the three-bedroom show unit with utilitarian philosophy. “The request from Savyavasa was to make a home design for a contemporary family that suits the urban way of living. I interpreted it as something that not only meets the needs of modern homeowners but is also beautiful and practical. I aimed for Casa Oak to blend functionality and luxury whilst allowing the future residents to reconfigure their spaces as needed,” said Eko in retrospect.

Firstly, Eko imagined the type of occupants that would reside in the unit. A social and well- travelled family with young kids with a very active lifestyle. “Usually, this type of family has many hobbies. They would need a significant storage area to keep the equipment, such as sport gears, coffee machines, art supplies, books, and cooking utensils,” Eko explained.

The third room, designed as a study or hobby room

With over 20 years of experience with his design firm AEDI Design Bureau, Eko has leant to put more significance in functionality and utilitarianism in his design, focusing on the people’s needs in their living and working spaces. For this reason, he allocated a bigger room than usual for storage and service area.

More space in the pantry, living room and dining area, which are all connected, is utilised as storage as well. Hidden storage modules are placed along one side, from the entrance to the balcony, which includes a disguised TV cabinet.

However, practicality is not enough. For this artsy family, Eko created a versatile layout with contemporary and elegant aesthetic displayed through clean lines and minimalist design. The TV cabinet has sliding doors where he incorporated an artwork titled “Ponder and Wonder, and Everything in Between” (2024) by Indonesian artist Haiza Putti. The dining table is placed under a unique chandelier and a magnetic track light that’s newly available in the country. They add a unique flair to the space.

The three bedrooms are dedicated as a master bedroom, a children’s room, and a versatile room. For the wall covering in the master bedroom, Eko drew inspiration from the paulownia tree, which created a unique graphic language, enhanced by advanced dyeing techniques. The layered fabric adds tactile comfort, inviting relaxation and intimacy into the space. For the children’s room, he incorporated tatami style to optimise the space. And the third room is designed as a study or hobby room, where he brilliantly replaced the traditional walls with electric switch glass that can be frosted at the touch of a button, providing transparency or black out for deeper concentration or privacy.

About 80 per cent of the furnishing is customised because it gave Eko more flexibility to create an efficient and functional space for the whole family.

Heaven for the Young Executives

A community-focused lifestyle, realised with an open-plan living room and kitchen

The two-bedroom show unit is designed by Brian Gondokusumo from GondoJules, a rising interior architecture studio founded by him and Julia Lestari. In the initial design process, Brian imagined a user profile of a young, sociable professional, who values both urban convenience and natural environment.

The unit design emphasised on relaxation, productivity, and social interactivity whilst focusing on comfort in a layout that allows an abundance of natural light to flood in through the big glass windows and a healthy ventilation system. The open-plan from the entrance to the balcony adds a sense of openness. “I designed the units with open layouts, where the common areas are all connected. This is to encourage social interaction and connectivity amongst residents,” Brian explained.

The large open kitchen design allows the user to frequently host small gatherings, whilst still being able to separate his private space. The kitchen is furnished with a long island table with hidden storage. By putting forward communal living and promoting a sense of community, the design aimed to create a vibrant and inclusive environment that could affect positively on the well-being of the residents.

The second room design takes buyers to imagine what their room will be used for

One of the rooms is converted into a hobby room, where they incorporated a lot of music elements, from a turntable to a dramatic music poster. Borrowing some of Brian’s own hobbies, the imagined user is someone who also enjoys various music and sports. Meanwhile, the master bedroom is designed for relaxation by incorporating warm and neutral-colours. All throughout the unit, warm and neutral colours predominate with wood and marbles.

Brian recognized the importance of maximizing every inch of available space in the 131 sqm unit, while maintaining a clean and uncluttered aesthetic. “To address this challenge, we incorporated clever storage solutions that were seamlessly integrated into the design, such as built-in cabinets, concealed drawers, and multipurpose furniture pieces,” Brian said. These storages not only optimised the functionality of the unit but also helped to create a sense of spaciousness and organisation.

“The idea behind Savyavasa is to create a living space that is functional for young executives in a dynamic surrounding such as Dharmawangsa area. The design is adjusted to their preferences and lifestyle, whilst giving extra values for a better quality of life. We are really happy to have created a space where people can develop and actually feel at home,” Brian said.
