It began in Hualien, Taiwan when a nun asked 30 housewives to collect 50 cents every day for charity from their daily basis into a bamboo banks. Master Shih Cheng Yen believes that every 50 cents that these women donated each day meant a lot to those in needs. With the coins, she started to help people and provided much-needed medication. This kindness raised people’s consciousness that benevolence should be a routine practise, no matter how small it is. The name ‘Tzu Chi’ was chosen for its literal meaning, giving with love, and from this basic principle The Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation was established in 1966.
