Hoshinoya Bali - Tropical Serenity

3/14/2022

Afternoon rain falls, leaves rustle, as a blanket of mist rises from the Pakerisan River valley. On arrival at HOSHINOYA Bali guests become instantly enveloped into the relaxing serenity of a tropical jungle. A magical place where you are more likely to hear the sounds of nature than the occupants in the neighbouring villas.

Located a 25-minute drive from tourist centre of Ubud, HOSHINOYA Bali distinguishes itself from other luxury accommodation. The exclusive all-villa resort sits on a lush hillside above the sacred Pakerisan River. A UNESCO heritage listed irrigation canal, or subak, over 1000 years old flows through the property and informs the basis of resort’s award-winning design.

Since opening in January 2017, the first HOSHINOYA project outside Japan has attracted much recognition in international media. Situated on three hectares and designed by Tokyo based architect Rie Azuma with landscape architect Hiroki Hasegawa, the duo flawlessly incorporate Japanese sensibilities with Balinese spirituality.

Amidst the tropical jungle, 30 stylish villas are arranged around three river-like pools, a distinct departure from the usual typical resort design where each villa has its pool. Three villa types – Bulan, Soka, Jalak – ranging from 187 sqm to 208 sqm in size, blend elements of Japanese design such as frameless futon beds on raised wooden platforms with remarkable decorative wall panels and batik lampshades, which showcases the legendary craftsmanship from Bali and surroundings.

Understanding Omotenashi

Japanese hospitality is the soul of HOSHINOYA Bali. Omotenashi refers to the unique relationship between host and guest, and the way hosts anticipate the needs of their guests. This notion is different to the English idea of ‘service’ where you do something because someone asks you to. Omotenashi is more proactive, like a voluntary act of kindness.

Another key Japanese term shukyakutaito (meaning master and guest are equal) is seen in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, where host and guest share the moment, appreciating the effort and attention to details. The occasion is enjoyed together regardless of position or status. The resort’s organisational structure aims to build a culture to empower all staff to think with initiative and create new and unique guest experiences.

Relaxing Mind and Soul

There is no TV nor clocks in the villas. This is a deliberate decision, across all the HOSHINOYA resorts, to provide flexible moments for guests to get relieve from the business of daily life.Without distraction, guests align themselves in the present, and appreciate the beauty of nature; the sound of the river, the feel of the mountain breeze, and the shadows of sunshine.

Melding cultures and landscapes

The villas are all arranged to resemble a Balinese village surrounded by long river-style swimming pools. The pool is lined with carefully designed water gardens that create private pool sections next to each villa. The overall effect gardens offer the illusion of naturally occurring streams.

The site roots itself in the landscape, a boardwalk mirrors the Balinese irrigation system. Gazebos resembling birdcages float above the path overlooking the valley, where guests have an unobstructed view of the majestic natural surroundings.

The paths through the different areas of the resort are lit to recall the flicker of stars. Lights are enclosed in containers decorated to cast beautiful shadows and give areas a warm glow. The subtle lighting embedded in the wall carvings that adorn each villa is perhaps the most stunning attribute of the interior design. Emphasising the depth and beauty of the carving accentuates the sense of wonder one feels staying in the remote jungle.

Deliciously Culinary Delights

When the sun rises enjoy the calm morning ambiance ensconced in nature at Café Gazebo. Relax on comfortable sofas while enjoying Air Gazebo Breakfast, a light breakfast in a picnic style. For a more hearty meal the a la carte menu in the dining room offers over 30 traditional Japanese and Indonesian dishes. The signature 10-course dinner prepared with the finest local ingredients, chosen for their authentically Japanese and Balinese aromas and flavours is a superb experience.

The menu, like the architecture and landscape design of HOSHINOYA Bali seamlessly meld two cultures together in a thoughtful and creative way to provide an unforgettable experience of a tropical paradise.
