Finding oneself in an international airport at 7.45 am could mean a lot of things: having just landed a long-haul redeyeflight, an early journey with hours to cover, or a long layover. But even with the morning blues, Dallas/Fortworth(DFW) International Airport Terminal D is bustling with passengers grabbing their lattes, sitting down for a breakfast, and enjoying a lively morning within the walls of the airport.

Coming into the departure terminal for a transit, the usual array of restaurants and shops welcome travellers. While there are stores and restaurants lining the walls of the airport, there are some occupying a square space with seating in the middle of the spacious airport.Combined with the high ceiling, this creates an al fresco mall feel.

The restaurants that are in Terminal D include thefrequent essentials such as Starbucks Coffee, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, Au Bon Pain Deli, and Jamba Juice. Less common selections are Banh Shop, a Vietnamese ‘baguettes and bowls’ featuring French Colonial influenced baguette with the bold flavours of Southeast Asia, Cool River Café, upscale steaks and seafood with Southwestern influences, and III Forks Steakhouse and Seafood in the upper level. Shops vary from Brooks Brothers to the classic bookstore.

Terminal D is designed by HKS, an international architect firm headquartered in Dallas. They believe that an airport is its own ecosystem, whose needs must be catered for by services within the terminals. The HKS website, hksinc.com, reports that one of the foremost project goals of Terminal D was to accommodate 37,800 passengers a day in a terminal half that size. With a new access roadway and connectivity to the airport-wide automated people-mover system, the 195,000 sqmterminal is designed to provide maximum operational flexibility even with the constant flow of passengers coming through the international airport.
