Indonesia’s growing presence on the international design stage enters an exciting new chapter as Indonesia Design District (IDD) PIK2 hosts the SaloneSatellite Permanent Collection Exhibition 1998–2026. Making its Indonesian debut, the exhibition will run from 18 September to 18 October 2026 at Townhall IDD PIK2 as a major highlight of Indonesia Design Week (IDW) 2026.
The exhibition presents 55 selected works from the Permanent Collection’s archive of 415 objects. Together, they trace almost three decades of imagination, experimentation and creative progress. More importantly, they reveal the remarkable journeys behind the designs, showing how an early sketch or experimental prototype can find its way into manufacturing, enter mass production and eventually become a contemporary design icon.
Founded and curated by Marva Griffin Wilshire in 1998, SaloneSatellite is the influential platform within Salone del Mobile.Milano dedicated to designers under the age of 35. It has long served as a meeting point between emerging creative talent and the global furniture industry. Since 2018, its Permanent Collection has been housed at the Artwood Academy in Lentate sul Seveso, within Italy’s renowned Brianza design region.
Rather than functioning as a static archive, the collection illustrates what can happen when promising ideas receive the right support. It documents encounters between designers, manufacturers, materials, cultures and new possibilities, demonstrating how a nurturing creative ecosystem can transform talent into meaningful careers and internationally recognised products.
Jakarta becomes the collection’s third international destination, following Hong Kong in 2024 and the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka. It also marks the first destination on Salone del Mobile.Milano’s latest international tour.
“Every object tells a story of a beginning, but also of a possible future,” said Griffin Wilshire, who will take part in the Jakarta programme as an ambassador for Italian Design Day.
Among the exhibited pieces is the Plank Chair by Studio Hendro Hadinata, created in collaboration with Jakarta-based EVERY Collections. Its inclusion gives the exhibition a symbolic homecoming while highlighting Indonesia’s place within the wider Asian design narrative. Other regional works include bamboo vases by Malaysian designer Shahril Faisal, a metal tray by Korean designer Suntae Kim and Interlaced, and an inventive room-divider lamp by Taiwanese studio ViiChendesign for Camino.
Supported by the Italian Cultural Institute in Jakarta, the exhibition will feature a spatial concept by architects Ricardo Bello Dias and Hariadna Pinate, designed to recreate the dynamic spirit of SaloneSatellite while guiding visitors through its many objects and stories.
For IDD PIK2, the exhibition continues a dialogue strengthened by its participation at Salone del Mobile.Milano in April 2026, where Indonesian craftsmanship and contemporary design were presented through rattan, wood, weaving, metal and ceramics.
Set within IDW 2026’s theme, Collective Culture, the collection builds a meaningful bridge between Italy’s celebrated design legacy and Indonesia’s rapidly evolving creative ecosystem. It invites designers, architects, manufacturers, students and the public to discover not only remarkable objects but also the courage, collaboration and persistence behind them, offering an inspiring glimpse of how today’s young ideas can shape tomorrow’s design culture.
