The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta

In its literal sense, the Phoenix is believed to be a long-living, self-generating bird, which perishes in combustion before obtaining a new life, arising from its own ashes. In a way, The Phoenix Hotel carries a similar story after being passed around, owner to owner. Built as a private residence to a wealthy Chinese merchant in 1918, the hotel fell into the hands of the Dutch during the Great Depression, then the Japanese in 1942, before being transformed into former President Soekarno’s residence and office after Indonesia’s independence. When it found its way back to its rightful heir, it finally obtained a new life — in spite of its historical wealth and cultural heritage — as a timeless landmark and elegant hotel. Here’s what it’s like to be at The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta.
