More than an exhibition, Alaya Kala is an immersive collaborative experience that brings together the sculptural works of Adi Gunawan with the creative visions of SANKHARA Art, Quatro Design Studio, Theory of Living, and POLA Studio. Together, they have created a thoughtfully curated spatial journey that invites visitors to engage with art in a deeper, more meaningful way.
Running from 3–26 July 2026 at Melting Pot GF, Astha District 8, the exhibition explores the relationship between art, architecture, memory, and identity through a contemporary lens.
Derived from the Sanskrit words alaya, meaning "a place of refuge", and kala, meaning "time", Alaya Kala represents a sanctuary where journeys, memories, and cultural traces are carefully preserved. Inspired by the rich cultural heritage that has shaped Adi Gunawan's artistic practice in Yogyakarta, the exhibition translates these roots into a contemporary spatial language, drawing inspiration from the architectural essence of the traditional Javanese Joglo house.
Rather than recreating traditional architecture literally, the exhibition captures its underlying spirit—transforming its values of warmth, openness, and human connection into a contemporary environment that reflects Adi Gunawan's artistic philosophy.
Through the unique expertise of each collaborator, Alaya Kala becomes a meeting point where art, design, and cultural heritage exist in harmony. Together, they present a contemporary interpretation of how collective memory can be transformed into a living experience—one that resonates with today's audience while inspiring new perspectives on culture, creativity, and belonging.
At the heart of this exhibition is SANKHARA Art, a contemporary art management platform dedicated to connecting artists, artworks, and spaces. Established in 2023, SANKHARA Art builds upon the remarkable legacy of ANDIs Gallery, one of Indonesia's pioneering modern art galleries, which has championed contemporary art since 1990. Today, it continues that journey with renewed purpose and fresh energy.
Representing a distinguished roster of artists, including Adi Gunawan, SANKHARA Art works across exhibitions, collaborations, and residential and commercial art projects. Guided by the belief that an artwork's story does not end when it leaves the artist's studio, SANKHARA Art sees every placement as the beginning of a new chapter—where art comes alive through its relationship with space, light, its inhabitants, and the conversations it inspires.
Through thoughtful curation and long-term relationships with artists and collectors alike, SANKHARA Art cultivates an ongoing dialogue between artwork and environment—a philosophy perfectly captured in its guiding principle:
Crafting Art, Curating Spaces.
This philosophy is brought to life spatially by Quatro Design Studio, an interior design consultancy established in 2017, which has been entrusted with designing the entire exhibition experience. The design process began with an exploration of the home as a place where memories are preserved, identities are shaped, and human relationships naturally flourish.
This concept closely reflects the themes explored throughout Adi Gunawan's body of work, where personal experiences, human relationships, gestures, and emotions become powerful expressions of shared humanity.
