There is a sense of power working in the remarkable design of ATABA office. What briefs did you get from the owners about creating this office?

When designing an office, we must understand what is required because office briefs are always about those requirements. Owners tell me what they need and what they wish for, and I, as a designer, try to fulfil what they have visualised whilst incorporating all the necessary elements.

Furthermore, this office occupies three floors connected as one unit, which is why we refer to it as a ‘penthouse office.’ Anyone who buys this unit must purchase all three floors because there are voids on two sides. These voids were already present, and I modified them to enhance the space. When we first accepted the project, the entire three-story space was bare concrete, including the lobby, office areas and toilets.

The beautiful design of this office leaves a lasting impression. How did the design process unfold?

Well, we spent a considerable amount of time on spatial planning. One crucial aspect of the design process is creating the flow for guests visiting the office. I designed an interesting layout by positioning the reception area on the middle floor of the three levels. Instead of the usual approach, where guests enter from the lowest floor and then ascend, this layout allows visitors to go either up or down, depending on whom they are meeting or where they need to go.

The voids are really fascinating. Can you elaborate on them?

Sure! The voids are indeed something special. When guests enter the area, they are suddenly presented with a stunning view of the city of Jakarta. Without these voids, this office would be just another ordinary space, similar to many others in the city.

The voids serve as focal points, allowing guests to not only enjoy the expansive view in front of them but also look up and down to the floors above and below, creating a dynamic and engaging environment.

The staircase is also a striking design element. How did you come up with the idea?

The staircase functions like a blood vessel, connecting all three floors. It provides easy access for those working there to move one flight up or down effortlessly. We also included internal elevators within the three floors, so people have the choice of taking the elevator or the stairs.

Another intriguing aspect of the design is the pop-up meeting rooms. Can you tell us more about it?

The pop-up meeting rooms add an organic element to the office’s design. The voids are like empty boxes, and by incorporating pop-up meeting rooms where people can be seen from any angle, we introduce a dynamic energy into the space.

When designing this office, did you consider the directions—north, south, east and west?

The voids are oriented in the north-south direction, which is beneficial. The western side of the office, known for being the hottest area due to the afternoon sunlight, is where the break rooms and restrooms are located.
