The krawangan embroidery is customarily used to decorate women’s kebaya. But in the hands of Ni Made Jati, owner and founder of Uluwatu Handmade Balinese Lace, the intricate laceworks are not merely used to prettify the trimmings of these traditional garments. Since 1978, she has started to embroider various floral patterns with entwining leaves and stems on tailor-made dresses, blouses and home accessories, showcasing her immaculate design patterns.
It all began from Ni Made Jati’s love and admiration of Pura Luhur Uluwatu with its gorgeous beach. When she was a little girl, her parents used to take her to the temple to worship and during her youth, she also used to spend her time in Uluwatu, sitting idly on the beachfront and inside a small cave while watching the beautiful rolling waves. “The waves splashing on the sand, making pure white bubbles as they do so, truly captured my heart. These bubbles are the foundation of my krawang design idea. And that’s why I use the name Uluwatu Handmade Balinese Lace for my company,” she explains.
