The Indonesian architecture studio Atelier Riri collaborated with Kopikalyan coffee shop to create a series of exhibition titled “More/Less”. The first exhibition was held in Tokyo, at Kopikalyan’s inaugural overseas outlet, from 17 to 26 May 2024. It was aimed to introduce Indonesia's distinctive architecture and to reintroduce the essence of Indonesian tropical architecture through Atelier Riri’s approach and philosophy.

The event also hosted discussions amongst Indonesian and Japanese architects, including Yoshiyuki Kawazoe from Kosou, Inc. Supporters of the event included the Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI), Japan Institute of Architects (JIA), ARCASIA Committee on Young Architects (ACYA), and the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo. In addition, Atelier Riri launched the international version of the “More/Less” book, following its initial release in Indonesian in 2022.

Following its success in Tokyo, Atelier Riri brought the exhibition to Jakarta. Taking place at the new Kopikalyan Menteng, the exhibition is running from 19 July until 16 August 2024. It retains the original concept of ‘Spatial Intervention’ and features similar materials, including wood, rattan weaving, and fabric. The intervention is enhancing the coffee shop experience on the first and second floors.

“We aim to recreate the experience and sensation we achieved in Japan as closely as possible,” explained Riri Yakub, the principal of Atelier Riri. He hopes the exhibition can inspire audiences through its exploration of architecture, culture, and sensory experiences. The event also includes talks with renowned architects. Other collaborators for the exhibition include furniture and crafts studio Roots Lab, graphic design studio Sapu Terbang, lighting designer Lume Lighting, and Prakarya Design and Build. The event is part of Wonders of Weaving and is supported by the Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI).
