COMO Uma Punakha: Immersed in the Valley

Set within one of Bhutan’s most picturesque valleys, COMO Uma Punakha invites a slower, more intimate experience, where landscape, design and stillness come into quiet alignment.

We arrive in Punakha to a noticeably different pace. The air feels warmer, the terrain softer, and the valley opens wide before us in a way that feels both generous and grounding. At COMO Uma Punakha, you are not simply observing this landscape. Here, you are immersed in it, drawn into its quiet rhythms almost immediately.

Outdoor terrace overlooking Punakha Valley

Perched on a hillside at the western edge of the valley, the resort overlooks orchards, rice fields and the winding Mo Chu River. Its elevated position offers uninterrupted views that shift subtly throughout the day. In the early morning, a soft mist lingers over the fields, while by late afternoon the light turns warm and golden, casting long shadows across the landscape. These transitions become part of your experience, encouraging moments of pause and reflection.

The design is understated yet deliberate. Materials such as stone, wood and traditional tiles are combined with locally crafted textiles, rugs and furnishings, creating interiors that feel both grounded in tradition and quietly contemporary. The palette remains restrained, allowing the surrounding landscape to take precedence, while each element within the space feels carefully considered. It is a design language that speaks softly, but with clarity.

COMO Villa Master Bedroom

Accommodation is intentionally intimate, reinforcing the sense of retreat. Valley Rooms, at 27 square metres, offer a calm and comfortable base, with views that extend across the fields and hills beyond. The One Bedroom Villas introduce more space and privacy, with separate living areas and terraces that open outward to the landscape. For a more secluded experience, the two-bedroom COMO Villa unfolds within its own garden, planted with azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias and hydrangeas. With dedicated butler service and a sense of complete privacy, it becomes a place where you can fully withdraw and recharge.

Beyond the rooms, the valley invites exploration, though never demands it. You may choose to visit nearby temples, walk through villages where daily life continues at an unhurried pace, or take to the rivers for whitewater rafting. Cultural landmarks such as Chimi Lhakhang, along with seasonal festivals, offer opportunities to connect more deeply with the traditions of the region. Yet equally, there is value in doing very little, allowing the setting itself to guide your experience.

Double Treatment Room

Wellness is woven seamlessly into the stay. At COMO Shambhala, treatments focus on restoration and balance, drawing from both traditional practices and contemporary techniques. The Bhutanese hot stone bath, in particular, offers a deeply grounding ritual, where heated river stones release warmth and minerals into the water, easing both body and mind after a day of exploration.

Dining Room From Terrace

Dining at Bukhari completes the rhythm of the day. With a menu that spans Bhutanese, Indian and international cuisine, and ingredients sourced from nearby farms, each meal feels connected to the land. The setting, overlooking the valley, reinforces this connection, making dining as much about atmosphere as it is about flavour.

At COMO Uma Punakha, you begin to slow down. Not by intention, but by instinct. And in that stillness, the valley gradually reveals itself, layer by layer.
