Yohannes Mochtar of Renovatio Design Studio is once again entrusted to shape one of Surabaya’s most prominent MICE destinations, The Legacy Ballroom, alongside the refreshed Han Palace Restaurant under the same roof. Both are conceived by Legacy Foods. Speaking with Indonesia Design, Yohannes reflects on the project’s challenges and breakthroughs.
With your experience in designing ballrooms, what is the most valuable insight you have gained?
We have developed a strong understanding of how a venue operates beyond its visual appeal. It is not only about aesthetics, but about supporting the full ecosystem behind every event. We consider operational requirements, as well as the needs of sales and marketing teams. This allows us to create spaces that are both efficient and commercially viable.
We also take into account the needs of event organisers and decorators, who often work within tight timelines. The design must support smooth workflows. It needs to be flexible, accessible, and technically prepared. With more experience, we are also more precise in integrating advanced systems that ensure seamless events and enhance the experience for both organisers and guests.
What distinguishes The Legacy Ballroom from your previous projects?
The ceiling is the most challenging element. It is highly intricate and requires precise technical execution. This is where experience is truly tested, both in design and construction.
The process required close coordination with contractors and specialists, each bringing specific expertise. We had to align design ambition with technical feasibility. The result is visually striking and reflects a strong collaborative effort.
What defines your signature approach in restaurant design?
We aim to create memorable moments within a space, areas that guests want to capture and remember. These moments are not superficial, but rooted in local culture and context.
We follow the client’s vision and operational needs, while also responding to market trends and user behaviour. Our approach balances all these factors.
Our signature lies in translating local culture into contemporary design. The result feels current yet timeless. We explore bold colours and strong details, while maintaining comfort and a refined atmosphere.
What milestone does this project represent for your team?
Each project is an opportunity to grow. In this project, we explored new approaches in materials and technology. We tested new combinations and production methods.
Technology was not only supportive, but became part of the design experience. This project allowed us to establish a distinct identity that meets the owner’s vision while advancing our design approach.
