Nestled in the serene environment of North Jakarta, a house in cul-de-sac,
known locally as tusuk sate, exemplifies modern residential design that integrates contemporary architecture, thoughtful interior design, and feng shui principles for optimal energy flow. Vincent Sontani, the designer of this unique home, speaks with Indonesia Design about how the layout caters to an open-minded family, the strategic placement of windows for a harmonious living experience, and, notably, the gourmet kitchen as the heart of the house.
Cul-de-sac houses, or tusuk sate homes, are often overlooked by homebuyers due to the traditional belief that negative energy flows directly from the perpendicular street into the house. Many still hold onto this notion, avoiding such properties at all costs. As a result, purchasing a cul-de-sac house is rarely a top choice for prospective buyers.
However, for an open-minded family, a cul-de-sac home nestled in a tranquil neighbourhood provides a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. Built on a foundation of modern architecture, this residence showcases clean lines, geometric forms, and a minimalist aesthetic. Comfort and functionality are key considerations, transforming the house into a nurturing and supportive space for daily life.
“Having lived in classic-style homes before, the family initially wanted a similar style,”Vincent recalls. “But after numerous discussions, they opted for a more straightforward design. It’s something uncomplicated that they could manage themselves without household assistants.” Addressing concerns about the tusuk sate positioning, he explains, “Only about 30 per cent of the house is aligned with the cul-de-sac, meaning it doesn’t directly face the street.”
Merging Modern Architecture with Feng Shui
The home’s design thoughtfully incorporates feng shui principles. The perforated block stones at the main entrance serve as a transitional element leading into the house, whilst the U-shaped façade is believed to redirect negative energy. The exterior’s striking aesthetic is achieved through sleek materials such as steel and concrete, forming a bold entrance gate and façade.
Inside, the focus shifts to maximising space whilst maintaining a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Designed for a family of four, the house incorporates practical solutions that do not compromise on style. At its core is the gourmet kitchen. It’s a haven for the cooking enthusiast in the family. Equipped with state-of-the-art appliances, ample storage, and a spacious island, the kitchen fosters culinary creativity and serves as a central hub for family bonding and entertainment.
Comfort and Functionality
This house delivers comfort as a priority. “The owners value simplicity above all else. They didn’t want the space cluttered with excessive ornaments or difficult-to-maintain elements,” Vincent explains. To achieve this, the designer selected a warm, neutral colour palette and carefully curated décor elements that promote relaxation and social interaction. “Every design choice ensures that each space serves a practical purpose without sacrificing aesthetics,” he adds.
In Jakarta’s tropical climate, cross-ventilation is essential for comfort. Thoughtful architectural design plays a crucial role in ensuring a well-ventilated home. Strategically positioned windows allow natural light to flood the interiors, creating a bright, airy ambiance. “The use of large aluminium glass panels, which can be fully opened, not only blurs the boundary between indoors and outdoors but also enhances energy efficiency by reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day,” Vincent remarks. These expansive openings strengthen the connection to the surrounding landscape, fostering a tranquil and healthy living environment.
Spacious living areas, a cosy master bedroom, and well-designed children’s rooms cater to the needs of each family member, encapsulating the essence of a comfortable and family-friendly home. “By prioritising key elements such as the gourmet kitchen for the avid cook and strategically placed windows to harness natural light, this house embodies the essence of contemporary living,” Vincent affirms.
With its harmonious blend of modern aesthetics, thoughtful functionality, and a connection to nature, this cul-de-sac residence serves as a sanctuary that boasts a harmonious and stylish living experience for its residents.
