The term ‘dandaman’ can be confused with the Javanese language, as its pronunciation is identical. However, it is derived from the daily spoken language of Banjar in South Kalimantan, meaning “longing for.” Like the city of Yogyakarta, where it is located, Dandaman Villa possesses a magical charm that makes its guests yearn to return.

Located thirty minutes west of Yogyakarta, Dandaman Villa is nestled in the quaint village of Sundi Kidul in the Argorejo area, surrounded by rice fields. This tranquil retreat offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city whilst remaining conveniently close to Yogyakarta’s key attractions. The villa’s design resembles a classic Mataram fort from the outside, standing out with its stunning architecture. The property indeed boasts a beautiful blend of modern and traditional Javanese styles.
Upon entering the lobby, guests are welcomed by a serene ambiance that creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. The use of local materials, such as wood and stone, adds rustic charm whilst paying homage to Javanese cultural heritage.
In front of each of the six rooms, guests can find a well-manicured garden featuring a long terraced koi fish pond in the centre, with the sound of flowing water enhancing the tropical feel. A swimming pool and Alun Banyu, the villa’s restaurant, are thoughtfully integrated into the landscape, providing spaces for relaxation and socialisation. At the corner of the swimming pool stands a temple dome, adding to the Javanese elegance. One of the region’s significant rivers, the Konteng River, flows just behind the villa, whilst its riverbank and tall shady trees create a picturesque panorama for guests.
“Dandaman Villa features unique designs that blend aesthetics and functionality. The design also emphasises the harmony of the natural environment and the essence of Yogyakarta. This approach adds cultural significance to the ambiance of the villa,” Harry Fatkan, designer of the villa, explained.
Harry also noted that almost all elements within the villa are custom-made. “From the doorknobs engraved with the letter ‘D’ for Dandaman to the wood-carved wall ornaments and the Rama and Shinta wayang decorations,” he added.
Upon entering the bedroom, guests are treated to a blend of luxury and comfort. Javanese decorative elements are incorporated throughout the room to create an unforgettable experience.
A classic-style wooden bed sits at the centre of the 44-square-metre room, complemented by wooden features on the windows, cupboards, and a long dressing table that evoke a timeless feel. Room amenities include a 50-inch smart TV, a Nespresso machine, and a modern bathroom equipped with a shower, bathtub, and urinal, ensuring comfort for every guest.
“Durability is a key consideration in the design,” Harry explained whilst giving a tour of the luxuriously appointed bathroom. “The choice of sanitary products complements the traditional classic design, ensuring that aesthetics match practicality for years to come.” All sanitary ware in Dandaman Villa was sourced from Galleria, a one-stop shopping destination for high-end bathroom essentials.
Meanwhile, Raymond Bachtiar and Lisdianawati Gonawan, the owners of Dandaman Villa and an avid batik collector, mentioned that the villa has received positive reviews for its serene ambiance. “Guests often highlight the well-decorated rooms that ensure a comfortable stay,” she added. “The staff is frequently praised for their friendliness and attentiveness, contributing to a welcoming experience.” Guests often long to return to this villa, which seamlessly blends tranquillity, exquisite design, and a taste of local culture in Yogyakarta.
