Indonesia is a heaven for beach lovers, boasting an archipelago with a total shoreline of 99,093 kilometres. As tourism continues to grow, more facilities are being developed along the shores across the country. Earlier this year, the Lampung Marriott Resort and Spa opened its doors to holidaymakers on the southern tip of Sumatra Island. This high-end beach destination is not to be missed, as it offers a wealth of exceptional features and facilities that will leave a lasting impression!

Located on the tip of one of Indonesia’s largest islands, the people of Lampung province are blessed with many ocean destinations for their weekend recreation. Visitors from nearby cities, such as Palembang and Jakarta, often join in the fun. Since June 2024, Hurun Bay has gained popularity as the home to the Lampung Marriott Resort and Spa, the first luxury beach resort in the region.
Hurun Bay is a serene area, just an hour’s drive from Lampung’s Radin Inten II Airport. Upon arriving at the hotel, guests are welcomed by a grand open lobby nestled between two buildings, with facades featuring ventilation designs reminiscent of Lampung’s traditional tapis cloth. The spacious lobby, called the Great Room, offers views of the expansive beachfront garden and its sitting area is furnished with comfortable chairs and a sunken sofa set. The fresh, unpolluted ocean air flows through the lobby, creating a welcoming atmosphere. At night, cloud-shaped chandeliers beautifully illuminate the space.
Budiman Hendropurnomo, the director of DCM Jakarta, is the visionary behind the hotel’s design. With longstanding experience in hospitality design, he creatively envisioned the hotel as a tiara for Mother Nature, whose entire head and body exist underwater. Each room represents a pearl in her tiara, providing quality living for every guest, while the forests on both sides symbolise her gracefully flowing hair.
The Delightful Restaurants
Opposite the reception desks is the Annona Bakery & Cake Shop, where the aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the fragrance of gourmet pastries and freshly baked treats. Whether you’re craving a freshly brewed cup or a sweet treat, Annona is the perfect place to relax and recharge.
Just a few steps from Annona, a grand stairs inspired by the tree of life, where a local seagrape tree is planted at the centre of the building, leads guests to the lower level and another culinary gem of the resort: Hara at the Hurun. This all-day dining restaurant serves breakfast and a variety of other meals. Its rich menu features everything from Indonesian favourites to international delights. With contemporary interiors and windows overlooking the garden and Hurun’s pristine beach, Hara offers a relaxing dining experience. Outdoor tables allow for al fresco dining while enjoying the beach vista, and guests often spot wild peacocks wandering through the hotel’s garden in the morning.
These peacocks inspired the narrative behind the resort’s other restaurant, Way Manom. According to local folklore, a little white peacock egg hatched on the beach, and the villagers named him Manom, meaning “evening” in Lampung. The name of the restaurant adds “Way,” which means “water.” Open from noon, Way Manom truly comes alive at night, illuminated against the sky. Located by the infinity pool right by the beach, it combines the richness of local flavours with the vibrant atmosphere of the seaside. Whether you’re unwinding or celebrating a special occasion, Way Manom offers an unforgettable dining experience with a diverse array of Indonesian dishes with a twist.
The Wildlife and the Garden
The beautiful landscape masterplan was designed by the DCM team and the softscape was by SHL Asia. A playful, nonlinear path, surrounded by grass and coconut trees, guides you from the hotel building to the pools near the Way Manom restaurant. The swimming pools are particularly popular among local guests when the weather cools down, especially at dusk.
A short walk from this culinary establishment leads to the resort’s Aviary. Birds are fed in the morning and afternoon, and the occasional deer can be spotted trotting around the area. Hornbills often flock around the resort, while owls sometimes perch atop the porte cochere. “The animals are free to roam, but they can’t go far because the vicinity borders a hill on the other side,” explained Budiman in an interview with Indonesia Design.
Wellness at the Resort
A plethora of activities awaits you at the Lampung Marriott Resort & Spa, from working out at the gym and snorkeling along Hurun Beach to booking a day trip to Way Kambas National Park and more. After your energetic pursuits, Quan Spa is ready to offer you a relaxing experience with relaxing treatments such as body scrubs, wraps, couples massages, facials, foot baths, and more. The spa also features a steam room, sauna, and ice fountain facilities. If you prefer an outdoor ambiance, you can enjoy a soothing massage in a cabana on the hotel’s private beach.
Incorporating the concept of wellness, the resort offers eight guest rooms located on either side of the spa, which can be booked as a package with spa treatments. Whilst adults indulge in pampering at the spa, children can play and make new friends at Spunky Monkey, the kids’ club. The Sumatra volcanic-themed playground sets the stage for endless exploration and laughter, featuring activities ranging from arts and crafts to thrilling outdoor games.
Meetings and Weddings
In addition to offering relaxation, the resort features five meeting rooms, each with a seating capacity of up to 40 guests. A 1,200 sqm ballroom is also available, which can be partitioned into two smaller ballrooms. The coffered ceiling, adorned with leaf-shaped chandeliers by Lasvit, adds a touch of luxury, making the ballroom ideal for weddings, conferences, and other events. The carpet is equally special, custom-made with a motif from Lasem, a coastal town in Central Java, known as batik tiga negeri (literally meaning “batik from three countries”).
The Guest Rooms
Lampung Marriott Resort & Spa is set on a sprawling 12-hectare property, ensuring that all 162 rooms, suites, and villas boast unobstructed beach panoramas. Located within twin buildings, the accommodations include Deluxe, Premium, Family, Duplex, and Suites. Each room features a cosy bed, a sofa, and a bathtub, and some guests have even been pleasantly surprised by visits from hornbills on their balconies.
The room decorations, “Selendang Nusantara”, are traditional textiles made by artisans from Sabang to Merauke. Some of them are from Batik Dudung, an Indonesian prominent batik artist and, of course, tapis, Lampung’s traditional textile.
The beachfront villas on the east side consist of four one-bedroom villas and two two-bedroom villas, while the west side features a combination of a one and a two- bedroom villa with private pool. Guests staying in the villa category are welcome to bring their pets.
Most villa constructions utilise kulim wood, native to the Sumatra forest. “This wood is known for its strength and is best left untreated, giving it a raw look,” Budiman explained. The spacious villa rooms, adorned in neutral and earthy tones, exude a sense of relaxation and sophistication. With a living room, a seating area in the bedroom, and a sea-facing porch, you can choose your preferred spot to unwind before enjoying a soak in the large round bathtub with full slab blue quartz marble. Finally, you can snuggle into the comfortable canopy bed and rest soundly, lulled by the gentle sounds of the ocean waves.
When you stay at Lampung Marriott Resort & Spa, you not only discover a new beachfront destination but also experience an unforgettable escape with breathtaking views. It’s easy to switch off, relax and rejuvenate all at once!
