Few figures have shaped the careers of emerging designers with the vision, warmth and lasting influence of Marva Griffin Wilshire. Born in Venezuela and later making Milan her adopted home, Griffin has built an extraordinary career connecting creative talent, industry and international design culture.
Her journey in the furniture and design world led her to Salone del Mobile.Milano, where she previously directed international press relations. Today, she serves as Ambassador for International Relations, representing the celebrated Milanese institution and strengthening its connections with design communities around the world.
Griffin’s most enduring contribution began in 1998, when she founded SaloneSatellite. Conceived as a platform for designers under the age of 35 at the beginning of their careers, the event has become one of the world’s most influential showcases for emerging talent. Under her continued direction, SaloneSatellite has introduced young creatives to manufacturers, industry leaders and global audiences, helping many promising ideas develop into successful products and meaningful careers.
Her dedication has earned some of design’s highest honours. In 2014, Marva received the prestigious Compasso d’Oro Lifetime Achievement Award. Milan presented her with the Ambrogino d’Oro in 2017, recognising her contribution to the city and its creative identity. She was awarded an Honorary Master’s Degree in Design by Politecnico di Milano in 2021, followed by an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2024.
Her influence also extends into education and cultural institutions. Marva has been a member of MoMA New York’s Philip Johnson Architecture and Design Committee since 2001 and an Italian Design Ambassador since 2016. In November 2023, she became a visiting professor at Tongji University’s College of Design and Innovation in Shanghai.
In 2025, Marva visited Indonesia for the first time, attending the opening of Indonesia Design Week at Indonesia Design District PIK2. During her brief yet meaningful visit, she met young designers and delivered a speech that reflected her belief in nurturing new voices.
Marva’s legacy is ultimately measured not only through awards but also through generations of designers she has encouraged. With curiosity, generosity and an unwavering eye for talent, she continues to ensure that young ideas are given the opportunity to be seen and the space to grow.
