Edoardo Perera Castro, general manager of Paradisus by Meliá Bali, shares how one of Bali’s most established resorts has been reimagined into a more contemporary, experience-driven destination. In conversation with Indonesia Design, he reflects on the vision, design process, and guest response behind the transformation.
The shift from Meliá Bali to Paradisus by Meliá Bali feels significant. What was the idea behind it?
The intention was to enhance the property while respecting its legacy. Rather than simply renovating, we set out to rethink the entire guest experience.
This meant introducing a more contemporary concept that blends wellness, sustainability, and local culture. The luxury all-inclusive approach is central to this, allowing guests to enjoy a seamless stay where everything is thoughtfully curated. It’s about creating something that feels both effortless and relevant to today’s traveller.
How did the design process unfold?
It was a collaborative effort involving international designers, local artisans, and brand specialists, ensuring a balance between global standards and Balinese authenticity.
With the resort fully closed, we had the opportunity to execute a complete transformation. Strong coordination across all teams was key, allowing the project to move smoothly despite its scale. Throughout, the focus remained on quality, craftsmanship, and sustainability.
What do you hope guests feel when they experience the new Paradisus?
For returning guests, we hope there’s a sense of familiarity, but also discovery. Many iconic elements remain, but the experience has been elevated.
Ultimately, we want guests to feel relaxed, inspired, and immersed in a refined yet authentic Balinese environment.
From a design perspective, what stands out most?
The seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces is a defining feature, creating a sense of openness and calm that reflects Bali’s natural surroundings.
Natural materials, layered textures, and lighting add warmth and depth, whilst concepts like the Family Concierge introduce comfort and functionality for different types of guests. The new ballroom also stands out, offering a more immersive event experience. Overall, the design encourages a deeper connection to the destination.
As the first Paradisus by Meliá in Asia, how has the response been?
The response has been very positive. Guests appreciate the elevated service, refreshed design, and curated experiences. The guests have particularly appreciated the clear distinction between offerings, such as the adults-only Reserve and the Family Concierge, as well as the expanded dining options. Returning guests are excited to see how the property has evolved, whilst new guests are discovering something that feels fresh and distinctive within Bali’s luxury landscape.
