A refined vision of modern tropical living unfolds in this Sky Suite at The Residence at The St. Regis Jakarta, designed by Hans Susantio. Indonesia Design sat down with the designer to discuss the inspirations and ideas behind the residence.
Perched high above Jakarta’s dynamic skyline, this Sky Suite at The Residence at The St. Regis Jakarta offers a quiet retreat from the bustling city below. Designed by interior designer Hans Susantio, founder of Vin.da.te Interior and Architecture, the residence embodies a refined interpretation of modern tropical living where elegance, openness, and thoughtful craftsmanship shape the atmosphere of the home. Here, luxury reveals itself not through excess but through balance, restraint, and carefully curated details.
At first glance, the residence conveys a sense of calm through its palette. Instead of relying on dominant colours, the interior embraces a harmonious composition of bright yet soothing earth tones. Soft beiges, warm sands, gentle greys, and subtle monochrome accents create a serene visual rhythm throughout the home. These hues reflect the essence of modern tropical design, creating spaces that feel light, airy, and subtly connected to the surrounding urban landscape.
“The spaces are intentionally uncluttered,” Hans explained. “Instead of filling the rooms with excessive decoration, the design prioritises clarity and openness. Each piece of furniture, each material, and every architectural detail has been selected with purpose.” The result is an environment that feels spacious and tranquil, where every element contributes to a carefully balanced sense of harmony.
The Opulent Touch
Craftsmanship plays a central role in shaping the luxurious character of the residence. Several pieces of furniture were custom designed specifically for the home, allowing each element to respond to the scale and personality of the space. The pieces are elegant yet understated, combining clean modern lines with subtle sophistication.
Custom-designed carpets further enrich the atmosphere. Featuring delicate ombré colour transitions, the carpets gently blend tones together to introduce softness and visual depth while maintaining the calm aesthetic that defines the residence.
Another distinctive feature is the custom-designed dining table and its accompanying chairs. “The table is crafted not simply as a functional element but as part of the design language of the residence,” Hans explained. Precision and attention to detail define the piece and reinforce the refined identity of the space while maintaining a sense of effortless simplicity.
The foyer welcomes residents and guests with quiet grandeur. Rather than serving merely as a transitional space, the foyer functions as a flexible area that can open toward the cigar room. This thoughtful spatial relationship allows the residence to shift effortlessly between formal and relaxed atmospheres.
“When opened, the foyer and cigar room become a larger social space. When closed, each area retains its sense of privacy and intimacy,” Hans said while guiding us through the residence.
The cigar room itself is designed as a sanctuary for relaxation. It is conceived as a sophisticated retreat within the home where one can unwind, reflect, or enjoy intimate conversation. Rich textures, comfortable seating, and subtle lighting create an atmosphere of masculine elegance balanced with warmth. Despite its luxurious character, the room remains aligned with the calm design philosophy that defines the entire residence.
The Pièce de Résistance
Among the most remarkable spaces in the residence is the master bedroom. Designed as a private retreat, the master suite represents the ultimate expression of comfort and indulgence.
“The highlight of this space is the presence of a jacuzzi and a sauna, transforming the bedroom into a personal wellness sanctuary,” Hans shared. In this space, relaxation becomes an integral part of daily life.
The design of the master bedroom follows the same principles found throughout the residence. Calm colours, thoughtful lighting, and a balanced spatial composition create a warm and soothing environment. Natural textures and soft materials encourage rest and rejuvenation. The addition of the jacuzzi and sauna further enhances the experience, offering moments of quiet indulgence within the privacy of the home.
Despite its luxurious features, the residence never feels overwhelming. Instead, it maintains a sense of ease and liveability. The design remains refined without becoming excessive, allowing each space to feel inviting while still expressing understated elegance.
Functionality is also carefully integrated into the design. To enhance convenience and accessibility, the residence is equipped with two elevators that allow seamless movement between levels. Their presence reflects the careful planning behind the architecture and supports the practical needs of contemporary living.
A Sophisticated Design
The relationship between interior space and natural light further reinforces the modern tropical concept. Soft daylight filters gently through the rooms and illuminates the earthy palette while highlighting the textures of the materials. In this home, light becomes a design element in itself, bringing warmth and vitality into the living environment.
Ultimately, the residence represents a harmonious fusion of modern sophistication and timeless design. Every detail, from custom furniture and ombré carpets to curated artworks and wellness features, contributes to a carefully composed lifestyle.
“A timeless modern design is not defined by trends but by enduring elegance,” Hans concluded. “In this residence, luxury is quiet, craftsmanship is celebrated, and comfort is never compromised.”
The result is a home that feels both refined and deeply personal, a sophisticated sanctuary designed for living well today and for many years to come.
