Tucked at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in one of West Surabaya’s verdant residential enclaves, RA House reveals itself as both sanctuary and subtle revelation. Designed for a family of four, the home reimagines the ground it rests upon, shaping landscape into architecture through a gesture that feels at once protective and poetic, as though the house has emerged organically from the earth to embrace the lives within.
An unexpected move defines the project from the outset, as RA House reimagines the land it occupies. Instead of simply accepting the site as it was, Ivan Priatman, the designer of RA House, conceived a design that gently lifts the ground, almost as if inviting it to breathe. What would typically be a passive setback is transformed into a sculpted, man-made hill. It rises softly from the street like a quiet protective embrace. This elevated terrain forms a natural veil, granting the family a sense of privacy while anchoring the home firmly in its surroundings.
A diagonal ramp slices gracefully through the green slope, as it guides visitors on an unhurried and almost contemplative ascent. Each step feels planned, and the transition from the outside world to something more personal is slow. At the top, the entrance presents itself with quiet confidence. Restrained in detail yet assured in presence, it is grounded by a dark granite floor from Asindo Stone Marble Granite, creating an arrival that feels both personal and gently ceremonial.
This crafted landscape does more than shape the experience. It is the architecture itself. Draped across the ground level like a living layer, it conceals much of the first floor, allowing only the discreet gesture of the garage entrance to meet the street. The result is a home that reveals little at first glance, inviting curiosity through its calm and understated elegance.
A Composition of Lines and Volumes
Above this grounded base, the house unfolds as a composition of crisp that interlocks volumes. Rendered in smooth white surfaces, the architecture balances solidity with lightness. The upper floor appears to hover. Its form extends beyond the level below to create a subtle yet dynamic sense of movement. This interplay of mass and void frames the entrance beneath, which reinforces the home’s layered spatial narrative.
RA House is designed to be discovered gradually. Its street-facing façade remains deliberately restrained, solid, opaque, and protective. This is not merely an aesthetic decision but a response to Surabaya’s intense western sun.
In contrast, the rear elevation opens generously toward the east and dissolves into expansive panes of glass that overlook a tranquil courtyard and lap pool. Aluminium frames and full-height sliding doors by Alegra Aluminio invite the outdoors in. It boasts natural ventilation whilst allowing light and air to flow freely throughout the home.
A Living Space Defined by Ease
At its heart lies a fluid open-plan living area, where the kitchen, dining, and lounge spaces merge in harmony. Positioned alongside the pool terrace, these communal areas support both the rhythms of daily life and the ease of relaxed gatherings. Here, the boundary between indoors and outdoors softens. It creates a living environment that shifts effortlessly from calm family mornings to lively evenings under the tropical sky.
Upstairs, the private quarters are arranged with clarity and intention. The gentle light of the morning sun comes into each bedroom from the east, and the harsh heat of the afternoon stays out. A naturally lit corridor connects these rooms, doubling as a gallery for art and personal expression. More than a passage, it draws daylight deep into the interior, which enhances openness and tranquillity.
All in all, RA House is an exercise in quiet confidence. Its geometry is precise, its palette restrained, and its gestures measured. Every element responds thoughtfully to site, climate, and lifestyle, resulting in a home that feels both grounded and uplifting.
In a city as dynamic as Surabaya, RA House stands out not by demanding attention, but by offering clarity and calm. Through long horizontal planes, soft natural light, and a serene pool courtyard, it creates a home that is at once composed and deeply welcoming.
