Situated in an esteemed, upper- middle-class residential community in West Surabaya, this stunning Classic-style house has recently been completed. Designed by the renowned Hawawinata and Associates, the house serves as both a warm and inviting home for its residents and a welcoming space for extended family and friends during special occasions.

The captivating façade

Approaching the residence, visitors are greeted by a palatial façade featuring four tall, white pillars at the porte cochere. A grand flight of stairs leads to the entrance door on the first floor. It is a standout feature of the home. This custom-designed iron door, adorned with intricate classic ornaments, is not just an entryway but a symbolic representation of the house’s overall character.

The entrance opens into a foyer illuminated by a magnificent chandelier hanging from a mirrored ceiling. Adding a glamorous touch to the space is the black-and-white liquid-patterned marble floor, which contrasts nicely with the leafy garden painting on the wall. Beyond the foyer is an open-plan living room with two seating areas and a sleek pantry to one side. The furniture is predominantly in subdued beige tones, with blue accents on the single sofas and cushions that pop. Adjacent to the pantry, the dining room features an elegant eight-seater dining table, beautifully complemented by chandeliers and a mirrored wall, which creates the illusion of a more expansive space. From the foyer to the dining room, a few potted indoor plants are subtly placed, adding a touch of nature to the home.

The interior with semi-classic furniture

Balancing the homeowners’ desire for privacy and their love for social gatherings, the architect team meticulously planned the layout. “We developed circulation and space zones that are both simple and functional. This strategic allocation of space allows for simultaneous activities without interference,” explained Erwin Hawawinata, the principal architect at Hawawinata and Associates.

The first floor is carefully divided into three distinct zones, ensuring both openness and privacy. A solid wall separates the welcoming foyer from the main living areas. The guest bedroom, living room, and karaoke room occupy a semi-private zone, distinct from the dining and pantry areas. This thoughtful arrangement ensures multiple activities can occur simultaneously without disruption, making the house a convenient place for having parties with a lot of guests.

The dining room overlooking the back garden

A striking void above one of the seating areas visually connects the first and second floors. Accessible via stairs or an elevator, the second floor is dedicated to private living spaces for the multi-generational family, with several bedrooms offering serene views of nature. Large windows and private balconies invite natural light inside, while chinoiserie accent in the master bedroom and organic-shaped furniture throughout the home create an atmosphere of timeless elegance.

Discussing the interior design, Aji Warpani, senior principal/ partner at Hawawinata and Associates, noted, “To achieve a sophisticated and dynamic ambiance, the interior features semi-classical furniture with refined details. A carefully curated colour palette adds visual interest, avoiding monotony.” As for the flooring, Warpani elaborated, “Our marble selection reflects a nuanced approach tailored to each room. For the entrance, for instance, we chose a marble with bold patterns and colours to create a visually striking and memorable impression.”

A dazzling entrance foyer

Adding an artistic flair, the home features hand-painted acrylic artworks strategically placed in the foyer, living room, and stairwell. These beautiful pieces not only elevate the aesthetic of the interiors but also serve as conversation starters during social gatherings.

Outdoor gatherings, including family breakfasts, can be hosted on the back terrace, where a dining table overlooks a lush green garden. The serene view is complemented by the sounds of chirping birds, creating an idyllic retreat. The lovely garden draws inspiration from classic European landscaping, characterised by well-structured plant layouts and a minimalist approach to greenery. This design ensures both visual elegance and long-term sustainability with minimal maintenance. The blue and teal tiles of the swimming pool add a sense of peacefulness to the ambiance of the backyard.

The luxurious and serene master bedroom

At one end of the swimming pool, a gazebo with a dome-shaped roof awaits, offering a tranquil spot for relaxation after a few laps. Bird-themed elements adorn the gazebo’s roof, enhancing the natural ambiance. Nearby, a staircase leads to the ground floor, which accommodates a garage and dedicated staff quarters. The façade of the ground floor is visible only from the front of the house.

Rich with eclectic features, this house is a true reflection of the homeowners’ aspirations, brought to life by the expertise of Hawawinata and Associates. With nearly two decades of experience in designing private residences, the architects seamlessly blended their vision with the clients’ needs, resulting in
a home that is both timeless and uniquely personal.
