Vastu at 20: A Legacy of Living with Design

Twenty years ago, Jakarta’s design landscape looked very different. Contemporary European furniture was still unfamiliar to many, while sleek silhouettes and minimalist forms were often perceived as stark or overly simple. It was within this landscape that Vastu opened its doors in 2006, introducing a fresh way of seeing furniture, not simply as something functional but as an expression of creativity, craftsmanship and contemporary life.

Originally known as Vastuhome, the showroom was conceived as the residential arm of Malka, complementing the company’s furniture portfolio with a carefully curated selection for high-end homes. Its striking black-and-white building reflected the design language it represented: clean, confident and distinctly modern.

Being ahead of its time, however, meant that Vastu had to do more than display beautiful pieces. It had to nurture an appreciation for them.

In its early years, the team regularly introduced clients, designers and students to the stories behind each collection. Why was a particular chair shaped that way? Who designed it? What made its materials or construction exceptional? These conversations became an important part of Vastu’s identity. The showroom was not merely selling furniture; it was helping cultivate a deeper understanding of design.

Two decades later, that patience has been rewarded. Today’s clients are more knowledgeable, internationally connected and curious about the provenance of the pieces they bring into their homes. Many arrive already familiar with a designer, a collection or a particular product they have discovered through travel, magazines or digital platforms.

Vastu has grown alongside this increasingly design-conscious audience. While its foundation remains contemporary, its collection has gradually expanded beyond the strict minimalism of its early years. Brands with more expressive forms, richer personalities and playful details have been introduced, allowing the showroom to respond to changing tastes without abandoning its original point of view.

Its portfolio brings together established European names, including Moooi, Zanotta, Gandia Blasco and Fiam, companies with long histories and enduring influence on international design. Yet it is the way Vastu curates these names that gives the showroom its character. Rather than following trends, it looks for pieces with relevance, integrity and the ability to remain meaningful over time.

Some are instantly recognisable icons. Others reveal their value more gradually, through the experience of sitting, touching and living with them. A sculptural glass chair or the original Zanotta beanbag may appear almost like an artwork in a gallery, yet each is intended to be used and enjoyed. This is perhaps the most alluring quality of the Vastu collection: it presents design as art that becomes part of everyday life, art one can sit on, gather around and grow old with.

The showroom has also responded to changing lifestyles. Younger homeowners tend to favour furniture that is compact, sleek and elegant, particularly as urban residences become more considered in scale. At the same time, there is growing interest in outdoor living. Vastu’s outdoor selection offers a contemporary alternative to conventional rattan or timber furniture, with weather-resistant materials such as aluminium and polyethylene providing durability, comfort and easy maintenance in Indonesia’s tropical climate.

This approach reflects one of the reasons Vastu has endured for 20 years: it listens. Its collection evolves as homes, habits and generations change. Brands may be added or reconsidered, but the philosophy behind Vastu remains constant: to introduce distinctive design that enhances the way people live.

Marking its anniversary, Vastuhome is now embracing the name by which it has long been affectionately known: Vastu. Accompanied by a renewed visual identity, the change feels less like a reinvention than a natural homecoming. It is a simpler name for a showroom that has spent two decades building something substantial.

In an industry often captivated by what is new, longevity comes from knowing what deserves to last. Vastu has stood for 20 years because it has remained curious without losing its identity, evolved without chasing every passing trend and continued to believe that good design can enrich daily life.

Its story is ultimately not only about furniture. It is about the people who discover it, the conversations that unfold around it and the homes in which it quietly becomes part of a family’s history.
