Amanaia Satrio offers a serene retreat amidst the city’s hustle, boasting aesthetics with modern elegance. Over a tranquil pond, its wooden walkways, floating pavilions, and the soft glow of lanterns create a sanctuary of peace yet festive for those seeking a distinct culinary experience. Indonesia Design speaks with Piter Gan, founder of Piter Gan Architect, to explore the vision behind this harmonious space.
Can you brief us on the design of Amanaia?
Every detail of Amanaia is designed to engage the senses. We have designed this place as an immersion into laidback with natural ambience as the backdrop. The entire compound is oriented to big water pond setting, lush greenery, and open- air design to cultivate a sense of relaxing. This allows guests to feel present and connected. Such harmonious integration with nature encourages meaningful moments. Each of the restaurant’s dining spaces provides guests with different dining experiences.
What challenges did you encounter in designing this property compared to other Amanaia restaurants?
Located in a prime business district, the site posed both opportunities and challenges. Building a low-rise restaurant among high-rises required attracting passersby, which we addressed with a uniquely shaped structure and an animated façade featuring a dynamic waterfall. To minimise traffic noise, we strategically positioned the main building and installed waterfalls in the parking area and within the compound.
The soothing sound of flowing water, the rich textures of natural materials, and the dynamic interplay of light and shadow create a space that is both visually captivating and calming. Equally important was crafting a welcoming ambiance, achieved through a spacious, inviting lobby. The layout is carefully designed to accommodate everything from grand celebrations to intimate gatherings, ensuring each experience feels personal and memorable.
Do you think the design of Amanaia Satrio meets your expectations? How do you define a successful design?
Yes, Amanaia Satrio has met my expectations in creating a space where nature and architecture harmonise. A successful design, in my view, is one that evokes emotion, enhances the user experience, and responds to its surroundings. The integration of water, greenery, and open-air spaces fosters a sense of serenity whilst maintaining a vibrant atmosphere. The interplay of textures, lighting, and spatial flow contributes to an immersive experience, making the space not just aesthetically pleasing but also functionally engaging.
