Kalvin Lie: Leading with Vision in Crafting Serene Dining Experience

3/28/2025

Amanaia Satrio is not merely a restaurant. it is a serene retreat where nature, architecture and gastronomy harmonise. Inspired by Balinese and Japanese aesthetics, its design creates a tropical sanctuary amidst Jakarta’s high-rises. Managing Director Kalvin Lie shares with Indonesia Design the vision behind this oasis and his plans for its future.

What inspired you to lead a restaurant chain?

I grew up surrounded by the F&B industry, working part- time at McDonald’s, Subway, and Hilton Hotel in Australia. That early exposure to hospitality made a lasting impact. After returning to Indonesia, I spent a few years in banking but soon realised my passion lay in creating experiences that bring people together. Hospitality isn’t just about food; it’s about connection, culture, and memories. That’s what inspires me every day.

How do you ensure Amanaia’s vision is reflected in its daily operations?

We bring Amanaia’s vision to life by staying true to our core values: authenticity, warmth and excellence. Amanaia isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a culinary destination that’s loved by employees, praised by customers, respected by the community, and a blessing to all. This means taking care of our people, maintaining quality and consistency, and always prioritising customers. With strong leadership, structured training, and a culture of excellence, we ensure every Amanaia location delivers the same memorable experience.

What was the inspiration behind the design of Amanaia restaurants?

Amanaia is designed as a peaceful escape, inspired by traditional Indonesian villages (kampung) where nature and community come together. We want to capture the warmth and authenticity of a kampung without feeling kampungan. We embrace warmth and authenticity whilst ensuring a refined, comfortable experience. From wooden structures to open-air spaces and natural surroundings, every detail is chosen to make guests feel at home.

How does Amanaia incorporate sustainability and community engagement in its growth?

Sustainability is about balancing growth, people, and the environment. We focus on responsible sourcing, minimising waste, and designing spaces that naturally integrate with their surroundings. Community engagement is equally important. We prioritise hiring locally, supporting local farmers and suppliers, and giving back through initiatives in education and culture. Our goal is to grow in a way that creates value not just for our business, but for the communities we serve.
